I reached Koh Samui the way a lot of travelers do when flights to Samui feel like a splurge: I flew into Surat Thani (URT), bought a combined transfer plus ferry ticket, and let the operators funnel me from airport curb to island pier with as little decision-making as possible. It worked, but it was not the frictionless glide the booking pages promise. This is the practical, right-now reality of getting from Surat Thani to Koh Samui, including what’s confusing on the ground, which piers you actually end up at, what the ferries feel like, and how to choose tickets that match your luggage, your budget, and your patience.
My Actual Route: URT Airport to Donsak to Koh Samui (And Why I Chose It)
I arrived in Surat Thani by plane, landing at Surat Thani International Airport (URT) in the morning with one rolling suitcase and a backpack. I had a hotel booked on Samui’s north coast, so my main goal was to get to the island early enough to check in, shower, and still have an afternoon that felt like vacation.
I considered three approaches: (1) buy everything separately (airport to Donsak pier transfer, then ferry, then Samui taxi), (2) buy a combined bus or van plus ferry ticket, or (3) switch modes entirely and fly from Surat Thani onward. The third option is the simplest on paper, but URT is not Koh Samui Airport. You would be looking at a separate flight routing, and it’s rarely the quick fix people imagine unless you’re connecting from a major hub and find a perfect schedule.
I chose a combined ticket because the confusing part of this journey is not the boat itself. It is the middle: getting from wherever you arrive in Surat Thani to Donsak, then making sure you are at the correct company’s pier and check-in point, then timing it so you are not stranded with your luggage in the heat. Combined tickets reduce decision points, and on this route that matters.
On the Gulf side, there are multiple well-known operators serving the Surat Thani mainland to Koh Samui journey. Seatran runs services between Donsak and Koh Samui (Nathon), with the booking system showing a passenger fare of 210 baht for that sea leg and a crossing time displayed as 1 hour 30 minutes. Raja also runs car ferry services from Donsak to Koh Samui, typically arriving at Lipa Noi. Lomprayah is the name most travelers associate with speed, using high-speed catamarans on Gulf routes and selling combined transfers that bundle van or bus segments with the boat.
